CHAPTER 12 DISABILITY AWARENESS
ACTIVITY
The Deaf PRINT FROM DOWNLOADS
Can you think, for example, how dangerous it would be to live your life without being able to hear ‘danger noises’ such as oncoming traffic, loud
bangs or shouting and screaming? You see, if a person cannot hear these things for themselves it is up to us to warn them of any dangers they might
not be aware of. The easiest way to warn someone of a danger is to attract their attention and either speak clearly to them so they can lip read or
simply point it out. Just imagine, though, how much nicer it would be to speak to a deaf person in their own language: sign language.
Below you will find a danger warning spelt out in sign language.
Use the signing alphabet at the bottom of the page to work out what it says.
Now try to sign
the following
words:
1. Hello.
2. Goodbye.
3. Please.
4. Thank you.
5. Can I help you?
