vehicles. As the number of cars have grown, so has
the number of roads. Our fastest and widest roads
are called motorways.
People who use motorways must follow the
motorway rules:
• The speed limit on the motorway is 70 miles
per hour, with no U-turns.
• You may only stop in an emergency or
breakdown. In this event pull right over onto the
hard shoulder and turn on the hazard lights, get
out of the car and stand behind the metal safety
barrier on the grass embankment for your own
safety and wait for the emergency breakdown service.
• In an emergency use the SOS emergency call-box,
these are approximately 1 mile apart along the
motorway. To find the nearest and safest phone,
look at the marker post nearest to your vehicle,
these are located on the verge every 100 metres.
The marker posts have a phone symbol on the side
that will point the way to the nearest and safest
SOS telephone. The Highways Agency Traffic
Officers answer these telephones and will know
exactly where it is located, although you will need
to tell them the number of the marker post nearest
your car.
