CHAPTER 1 SAFETY AT HOME
Falls
Did you know that more falls happen at home than anywhere
else, and that children are hurt in falls more than any other
accident in the home?
Think of the last time you fell over and why it happened.
Was it because you were trying to do something too quickly, or
perhaps you were tired?
Maybe someone left something lying around and you tripped
over it. The chances are, it could have been avoided.
Rugs and mats can make you trip up, and wet floors can be very slippery. So remember to mop up spills as
soon as possible and warn people that the floor is wet.
Stairs can be very dangerous things, even if you do think they are fun to play on. But it is not clever to play
on the stairs, especially if there are toddlers around.
Furniture can trip you up, and so can your shoe laces if you do not tie them properly. If you do not already,
you should use a double bow when you tie them.
Other people fall over too. Why do you think toddlers fall over? Why do you think elderly people sometimes fall over?
How can you help them if they do fall over?
Draw a poster to show how falls can happen and how to avoid them.
