Recycling Fact Sheet

Electronic devices, including Mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants and other hand-held items, contain substances which need to be disposed of in a safe and efficient manner.

Cadmium - from a single mobile phone battery - could seriously contaminate 600,000 litres of water (enough to fill a third of an Olympic-sized swimming pool). Cadmium is being phased out of new batteries.

Lead - used to solder components to the printed wiring boards - affects the immune, endocrine and central nervous systems and causes serious damage to children's brains.

Brominated flame retardents - used in wiring boards and plastic cases - have been associated to problems with the neuroligical, immune and endocrine systems.

Berylium - used in contacts and springs - can cause serious lung damage.

Data deletion for Mobile Phones / PDAs

First
Remove the SIM Card - this contains virtually all your personal data and is not required for recycling purposes.

Next
'Restore Factory Settings' in the Menu>Settings folder - this will delete everything stored directly on the phone - you will be prompted for a password which, unless you have changed it to one of your own choice, will be either 1234, 0000 or 1111 depending on the make of phone.

Your Mobile/PDA will now no longer contain any personal/private data and can be included for recycling.

Thank you again for supporting CSEF in this important recycling programme which not only helps provide additional funds, but also contributes towards some of the environmental issues that are causing concern.
