HELPING PUPILS TACKLE DANGERS AT SCHOOL

North Glasgow Housing Association is helping three local secondary schools to tackle issues such as bullying, drugs, peer pressure and anti-social behaviour.

The Association has teamed up with The Children’s Safety Education Foundation to sponsor books for a year-long course aimed at secondary school pupils aged up to 14 years.

The coursework contained in the book – Respect Your Life Your Choice – covers 11 major topics which are tackled in workgroups with class teachers.

The aim is to educate young people about the dangers they potentially face as they go through the difficult transition of adapting to life in senior schools.

The course deals with issues including alcohol, drugs and solvent misuse, car crime, vandalism, shoplifting and other forms of theft, and the entire spectrum of anti-social behaviour.

The aim is not only to help young people understand the dangers but also make them aware of the consequences of their actions should they ever be involved in these types of activities.

North Glasgow Housing Association’s Chief Executive Robert Tamburrini and his Senior Depute Ann Marie Devlin delivered books to St Roch’s, All Saints and Springburn Academy in time for the start of the new term.

Mr Tamburrini said: “We have often said that our Association is about more than housing and we have demonstrated that in many different ways in the past.

“It’s a big step for children to go from primary to secondary school and the change brings more than just challenges in education. We were delighted to support the Children’s Safety Education Foundation in their efforts to promote and further the personal, social, health and citizenship education of children.”
